METHODS
The muscle specimens were excised as soon as possible, depending upon the surgical situation, and were immediately placed in chilled, oxygenated Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer. Detailed information regarding the site of excision within the non-pregnant and pregnant uterus is given later in the text. Dissection of the specimens was made under a stereomicroscope and care was taken that the muscle fiber direction appeared parallel with the long axis of the specimens. The muscle preparations were kept to a size of 5 mm in length and with a cross-sectional area of 1.0-1.5 mm2.
